Spotted today, barely managed to snag some pictures of this on my walk to school this morning.

I'm glad that for once my phone was quick enough to snag a picture as it drove by!

A lot of these have been converted to hot rods, and given the unibody design(!) and how it works with a front clip, it's not surprising at all. An Audi FWD setup would make for quite an impressive one - and there's little sacrilege involved if you use a junker, of which there are many IIRC. It's the '32 Ford of France, with fewer dragged out of junkyards.

A euro hot rod sounds awesome.

Awesomeness confirmed.

Audi FWD - in fact most conventional FWD - would be difficult, because the Traction had an engine-behind-trans NS layout, so the axle is way too far forward to get an engine in front of, and the body arms are too narrow to get an EW layout between. You really need to steal a setup out of something rear engined but not a boxer.
Or out of something else French - I've often fantasised about a swap between a rusty SM and a Traction with a busted gearbox (which is terminal on these, there's no spares left).

My thought with an Audi would be using an older I4 or I5 setup turned around with a transaxle modification to reverse direction, but it looks like the CNC'ed parts required would be much more than some similar setups - some older drives are possible to reverse by accident! But no, the Audi transaxles I was able to find exploded are wholly asymmetrical, so would be a pain. Still easier than some things, though. I can't really think of any pure RR setups that use an inline that would be useful from a performance setup at all. Alternately, one could use an Audi setup and just have a very long hood, or put the radiator behind the engine a la Wartburg or early Renault.

"Traction with a busted gearbox (which is terminal on these, there's no spares left)"
Don't worry, lots (and lots) of money can cure that!

Slip a reversing gearset in between clutch and tranny?
I can't think of any RR I4 setups worth more than about 150hp either - I was hoping you'd say "oh, you mean a 20V turbosupernitrounobtainium powered XXXX mill!". But I reckon you'd be in with a chance of getting a V6 in without cutting the body too much - being 1 cyl shorter would mean you'd avoid the tallest part of the footwell.
Giving away the existing front clip is the easy way, for sure, but that's the best part of the design, IMHO. Dat grille, dem wings, dem lights, dem louvres! One could probably get away with stretching it all, but that takes serious body skillz. Or maybe graft on a 15/6 front end, which presum, ably was longer to take the extra 2 cylinders.
